Item search. This trivia comes with the question starting about 1921 to 1936, although the parent company started in the Northeast in 1767. The idea to this trivia came from Japan where it was originally used with tobacco products, but in 1926 an engineer from Connecticut set to find out how to make this natural product in long rolls for another application. Cheesecloth was the beginning of the search but turned out to be too course. Silk was too fine, and had bad properties that made it less than desirable. Pineapple tried--didn�t work. It turned out wood pulp and manila did the best job. When the war intervened, those materals were devoted to other uses like transpoeration, construction and packing for valves and shafts, so alternatives were again tried. Over time, the �new� rayon was attempted--coupled with some used rope. Baby steps were made to refine the item, and by 1947 after a form of melamine resin was added, to an improved makeup the item was on its way to become commonplace. By war end 30% of the users used the item. Today 95% use this item which the inventor (who retired in 1970) originally found in Japan. What is the item?

We need fewer smart people or much tougher questions. Bill gets today�s gold star.

The idea inducing item was found by Faye Osborne, a research engineer for the Dexter Company of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, and was used in Japan as a wrapper for cigars. (Not the cigar wrapper (tobacco) but to wrap the finished product.) It was a strong and flexible tissue. Osborne didn�t get far with the secretive tradesmen of Japan so he attempted to duplicate the fiber in 1926 and used all the fibrous products he could find. Hemp showed the best promise as it could be bound with wood pulp to form long rolls. He spent years as he attempted to dissolve the bond in the fibers to make it more porous. (Silk by the way was tried as early as 1904 but it dramatically changed the taste of the item contained.) By 1934 rolls of tissue like material could be made, but it used huge amounts of water to make and when finished it didn�t hold up well in it--and then the war intervened. By 1935 when he had things moving manila hemp went for other uses and much of the supply was in Japan�s territory anyway.

During the War, rayon and used rope (with oil extracted) continued the evolution. By 1942 a �paper� was available. By 1944 heat was used to seal the paper to itself and cloth stitching was obsolete. In 1947 a melamine resin (yes, melamine--this was the connection to John�s answer) was added to the paper to increase wet strength (still is) and the ubiquitous TEA BAG was more and more commonplace.

Note and update. C.H. Dexter Corporation was involved in a nasty takeover and so they broke themselves up. It didn�t work. Now part of the old company is with Ahlstrom paper, part with Loctite, and part with Invitrogen. With the latter, this old tea bag research is directly linked to stem cell research today where a scaffold of natural and benign fiber is used to attach and house stem cells, and when they are established, over time or with chemical prodding the scaffold dissolves leaving what is hoped will become a stand alone new organ shaped properly for implantation.

What is the name of the bit that is used to make the indentations in Dominos? Two names I'm looking for one American and one British. It is not the "V" bit as suggested by Rocklear.

Domino answer

When conceived, Dominos were essentially flat dice (die)--although it has evolved to other forms. According to Bobbi (Manager) at Puremco Co., Waco, Texas, the name of the bit used for making pips in dominos was a �bullet� bit, tapered but with a rounded bottom. They found this a better bit to hold paint to read the numbers. This is also what it is called in Great Britain. But in the U.S. and most other places it is called a "pip" drill as the dots on a domino are called pips. In America, before the year 2000, a �ball end mill� from a CNC machine was also used. After the year 2000 Dominos are not made in the US except by individuals with a serious precision problem. Wooden dominos are becoming a premium as they are now mostly molded in polymer and marble dust, or a urea resin and made all at once in complete sets in metal molds. Dominoes are made mostly in China where Mah Jong tiles are made too, but also in Africa and India.

The word "pip" commonly means a "spot" or a "speck", and perhaps that's why a domino's spots are called "pips".

"Pip" has been used not only to denote the dots on dominoes, but also the dots on dice, as well as the marks on playing cards (e.g. a four of spades has four spade pips on the card, and is also sometimes called a four-spot).
