Monday, Good morning world.

From the late 1830s through the 1850s, using millstones and a fan to push skyward the result, (The machine was invented by a person named Wood) one of Americas more famous philosophers, in a family business, made a product that could include bayberry wax and spermacetti. (It is not a candle). Apparently independently rediscovering a technology used by a German company, he by the 1840s produced the best of theseeven better than those of the British and French who were considered the best at this owing to geoglogy.

He called himself a teacher, surveyor, carpenter among other occupations. But his landlord wrote that his "fault" was he had no ambition.

Hint:

Personally used the product in a number of applications. As Linda Ronstadt sang "traveled to the beat of a different drum" and was seemingly always in debt. Hated slavery.
