Samurai Humpday Hee-Yah!
This might be a softball question...especially if you folks are PBS watchers, but here goes:
Hand crafted Samurai swords require master craftsmanship. Only the finest swords were acceptible and then only the best of the best were suitable for the highest ranking Samurai. Blade construction and sharpness were tested and measured to determin the quality of the blades. What were the testing methods and what rating was given to the best blades?

You can count the number of tests on the fingers of your hand. You had to eliminate the human factor. There is certainly the "thick bamboo" straight on test, and the slashing "bundled straw" test, but the swordsman test was the most, well, certifiable. I've not read how you might set up the test but the results were immediate.
Da Winning Answer
Gary gets the Golden Samurai Uni today. Swords were evaluated by how many human torsos they could slice through in one chop. The finest and sharpest swords were rated at 5 bodies. Only the best Samurai warriors would get the 5 body swords.

Where did they get the test subjects? If you were the fifth in line and it was only a 4 torso blade did you get to come back again?
That test procedure might have real potential in helping to solve some of our social problems.
