Monday, tough all over.

Monday, tough all over.

Jobs are difficult to find even for experienced and talented people. San Francisco may have your heart, but not your job. But even they do better than Hickory, North Carolina a furniture manufacturing Mecca for the past several decades. One of the more precise and prestigious jobs in that area has been as a skilled patternmaker for furniture and to make molds. Apparently no longer. The people are getting older, young people won't spend the time to learn, machinery has replaced most hand/eye functions, and foreign imports have done their damage. So the question for today is relatively simple. What can a skilled traditional pattern maker expect as a salary in Hickory, North Carolina these days? The number is between $10K and $100K. Within a thousand bucks will do.

Sometimes when a job gets specialized and in short supply the money goes up so I'll high ball it at $92,000.

Monday Answer

Im kinda surprised and leaned toward Toms thinking, but John gets the gold star today. Patternmaker people to me seemed to be masters of woodworking skills, and yet because of the way people are buying they seem not to be appreciated in the current North American disposable market. Old wood molds and patterns are now considered folk art and worth quite a bit these days on the antiques circuit. Architectural Digest often features them in their pages as displays and when the prices are provided they are quite a bit of money.

Based on a Career Builder online article in 2008.

Hickory, NC

 Wood model makers -- $24,799

 Wood patternmakers -- $25,750

 Upholsterers -- $34,240

It seems a crime to ignore the accumulated skill as their jobs are not so awfully differently paid as a Detroit septic tank servicer

 $24,689
