Time has a relationship with the answer. Not necessarily a week, though that is a part of the usage. Helps track. ;-)

A receiving table. Usually placed in the entry hall . There was usually a tray, often silver for the callling cards of visitors.

to my way of thinking it's Lynn (and the last hint) who provided the key. Today it's not as important for the seven drawers but perhaps four of the drawers that could be divised into seven. It's a cycle that occurs twelve times each year but not called that if you own your domicile. Then its a eight letter word.
