Say that I am in the process of nailing a project together, but the nails keep splitting the wood. I don't have access to a drill to predrill the holes. What is something that I can do to help prevent the splitting?

Re: Thursday trivia
I'd use the awl on my Swiss Army knife. But if you don't have that you can hit the nail (not) on the head.
Re: Thursday trivia
I don't want to be blunt abut it, so I will just tape it to not make a point.
