Belated Thursday trivia

The last time, I posted it early, this time it is late ;-) (I was on an airplane on Thursday and no access ;-(

OK, here is one for you. It is an actual photo that has not been modified. Can you tell me what it is called?

Seems I have seen pictures of an African savanna with a tree like this.

Re: Belated Thursday trivia

Are you playing with perspective? The picture doesn't show the base and I'm wondering if that tree fits in a tray.

Re: Belated Thursday trivia

It looks like it might be one of those trees on the African Savannah that get regular prunings by Giraffes. That further suggests it might be something in the Acacia family.

Re: Belated Thursday trivia

I'd guess Acacia also, neatly trimmed by high browsers.

hint

It is a real tree and grows that way. There was no photoshopping or playing with perspective in the shot other than to catch one by itself with a nice background. There are pictures of groves of them. The place where they grow has a bunch of other weird kinds of trees and plants. Another of those geographically separated areas. The common name is associated with a color. (also a mythical animal)

another pic and hint

Here is another picture of a bunch of them. (again, a real picture) The first part of the name is a creature that we might see a part of on some types of period furniture.

Good question, I had to search big time

Mountains in background and isolation made it a island dweller far away but far away. Asia and european knight's had association for the first and the color is dark in near the very beginning 750-650 NM of the visible spectrum

Answer *LINK*

For those that could not figure out the answer, it is Dragon blood tree. I am attaching a link to a website about an island where it grows. Take a look at some of the other strange trees and plants that grow there.
