Surin' it's a gud day! Blarney!

I admit I am pressed for time so a stole this problem, AND

I'm mad at the world so here is the trivia...A perfect cube has the volume of 4 3/4 cu. ft. It is made from 3/8 in. thick plywood. How much veneer would be needed to cover the outside of the cube. Assume the veneer to have a thickness of 1/32nd in. Tell us your work!

this assumes that the entire cube is assembled with mitred joints.

it also assumes that the veneer is applied before the cube is assembled.

((cube root of 4.75 + .75 + .0625) squared) X 6

answer is in sq inches

If I followed you correctly

your answer is 33.749386. If that is your answer also it is not correct.

My interpretation

The volume of the cube is 4.75 cuft, not the interior. If that's the case, it's just about 17sf.

I missed the cu ft I used cu Inches.and contrasting to Steve, I assumed enclosed volume not displaced volume.

Figure the volume of the cube. From there the sides in sq. inches.

i blew it. i read sq inches not sq ft.

also assuming interior volume not displaced volume.

(cube root 4.75 = length of one side in ft 1.476

X 12 =length in inches 17.71

+ 3/8 x 2 .75

+ .03125 X 2 .0625

__________________________________________________

18.5225 " per side

squared = 343.08 sq " per side

X 6 sides 2058.5 sq inches

divided by 144 sq inches per side 14.3 sq ft.

You'r all going to be wrong!

Assuming mitered corners.

Cube root of 4.75 is 1.68 rounded to 2 places

1.68 feet is 20.16 inches plus the thickness of the ply = 20.91 the length of one side. 20.91 plus the thickness of the veneer is 20.97

squared is 439.74, the area of one side times 6 is 2638.44 sq inches or 18.32 sq feet.

If not mitered, four 439.75 plus two 434.72 or 18.25 sq feet.

BUT

that does not allow for waste or having to buy in standard sizes and of course, cutting the first set the wrong size :) as the question is:" How much veneer would be needed to cover the outside of the cube". Not, ow much veneer would cover the outside of the cube. So you must know just how much you're going to need, to cut those pieces from. So my answer would be a piece of veneer 2 feet wide and 12 feet long. My quick check showed a 2 x 12 roll available. However I can't afford it so I decided to cover the cube in muslin and do a faux woodgrain finish with paint and stain. So the final answer would be, I would need no veneer to cover the cube!

but what is 4.75 ft^3?

The interior of the plywood cube?

The total displacement of the cube itself?

The answer matters...

I answered as if the cube itself was 1.68 ft on each exterior surface edge. I didn't bother to adjust for the thickness, since wood will move more than that and it's not sold in 1/32" increments. To be 100% accurate, you'd need to define tolerances.

My answer me lads.

This is a solution. We ain�t going to Mars here so I�ll count anything near 2,626 � 2,640 sq. inches. Or in my particular case at least 6,000 sq inches (backup wood for my skill level!) I started out today grumpy and it didn�t get much better, so here�s what I worked out.

The 4 3/4 cubic ft. volume is equal to 8208 cubic inches: 4.75 x 12 x 12 x 12 = 8208

The sides of the cube are 20.17185". This is the base measurement (not the measurement of the base)

The height of all sides is 20.92185" which is the base measurement plus 3/8' twice.

The width of two sides is 20.92185" which is the base measurement plus 3/8' twice.

The width of the other two sides is 20.98435" which is the base measurement plus 3/8' twice plus the veneer thickness of 1/32' twice.

The top and bottom are 20.98435" X 20.98435" which is the base measurement plus 3/8' twice plus the veneer thickness of 1/32' twice.

First sides - 20.92185" X 20.92185" = 437.7239 X 2 = 875.4478 sq in

Second sides - 20.92185" X 20.98435" = 439.0315 X 2 = 878.0630 sq in

Top and bottom - 20.98435" X 20.98435" = 440.343 X 2 = 880.6861 sq in

Total is 2634.197 sq in

Or as another opined via his Ti-83 hand held calculator in about thirty seconds over lunch (this time using miters) (as I watched with my mouth open) as I wrote it down. (Never did like that guy.)

Cube root (1.68), multiply by 12, add 3/4, square the result, multiply by six = 2,626.343457

Gary, I wasn't chiding you about your wordage, rather I thought that the math solution was so easy that I had to look for a deeper level of problem.

BTW I did all the math in Google's quiry window. It's interesting the power that is there.
