The last tie and what was it made from? The last spike driven to commemorate the joining of the railroads in Utah in 1869 (don't look at the Utah quarter to see a railroad spike because that isn't one) was made of gold and is in a museum in California. There was a silver maul for driving the spike and it was driven into a polished wooden tie, unlike the hand hewn redwood ties used throughout.
What was that tie made from and what happened to it?
