I love the 18th century Harrison clocks. There is even a complete wood clock (with a unique escarpment) still operating and made before H1, H2, H3. The answer here is in the old name for the lines laid out on an old football field before hash marks. In this case it refers to compensating for expansion of two metals in the swing of a pendulum. Gary got this one right it is the heat compensating 'grid-iron' pendulum. By incorperating both iron and brass rods he succeded in making a pendulum that would not expand or contract with changes in temperature.
If your pendulum gets longer the clock runs slower and vice-versa. And it was named for the square or circular cooking grills that had bars running across to hold whats cooking, the grid-iron.
