Iron Sole Plane
The Romans made wooden planes with iron soles, what was the name of the nineteenth century Patent for a cast iron hand plane. The plane looks remarkably like a modern plane.
The tote and knob are not original.

I took this picture back in 1976 in Indianapolis, it was in the collection of Ray Wilson, a truely incredible collection of woodworking tools. Many of which can be seen at the Childrens Museum in Indianapolis.
That is the best picture I have of the plane,sorry. There was also a small cast iron block plane with a wooden wedge which was also by the same maker in 1828.

It seem I have been mis-spelling this name for 30 years, it is actually "Knowles" as someone pointed out.
