Re: Fire starter?
Re Pre Bic, : ' >
Just how bad does someone need a light? Thanks for the extra ?, never have seen this before.
SMOKING GUN?????
Close, but not quite.
Re: Is it some.....
sort of a smoking device, such as a pipe? The sleeve, holder saves the unburned tobacco. Just a guessing.
No.
The basic design for this is actually quite old. It has nothing to do with smoking. When the answer does come out, look up the history. It is interesting. The one in the picture is made of wood, but there could be made of many different materials.
Does It Have To Do With Bees?
no (hint)
note the answer that was close but not quite. ;-)
Re: Does it...
have to do with religion, ceremonies(sp?).
No
It is for a useful, specific purpose. The interesting thing to me, is how the concept might have been discovered based on how old it is.
Re: no (hint)
To Carry coals when traveling?
no
Not for carrying coals. Looking for the name of it.
Re: cigar/cigaret/pipe lighter
Still can't quite grasp what makes it hot for sure. I was originally thinking friction by spinning the smoking rod in the cylinder.
No (hint)
It is a bit more exotic than that, especially when you consider how old the design is.
In the mid 1850's, English explorers found it widely used by primitive tribes in the jungles of SE Asia- Borneo, Malaysia, Burma, and the Philipines.
Re: Fire piston, : ' > Thanks
;-)
It is kind of an interesting gizmo. Do a google search for "fire piston"
and you will find some stuff. There is some evidence that Rudolph Diesel got the idea for his engine from one of these.
Well dang
When you said no to fire starter I ruled out fire piston, aw heck I thought I knew what it was but couldn't remember what you called it anyway.

Re: I really is...
interesting how the FP works. Would be interest to find out how someone came up with this device, especially before diesel engines. Maybe, playing around trying to make a toy, and bingo! For a native person in the wild, more exciting than having a candy bar melt in your pocket, : ' >. Thanks again, Dan.
P.S. I Googled the answer with your hints, sure you figured that out, : ' >
Re: I really is...
There is some speculation about how it came about in some of the histories on the web. I came across it and it interested me so I read some about it and thought it would make an interesting trivia question.
Re: Well dang
I didn't rule it out ;-) I just said that it was close, but not quite.... ;-)
