Ok, since water/juice is miscible(dissolves) in alcohol, when you put say 1000ml of water(juice) into 1000ml of alcohol (wine) you do not get 2000ml of mixture but somewhat less. Since wine is mostly water and juice is mostly water, mixing the 2 together will give a mixture where the resultant volume is only slightly less than the two separate volumes. Also since you put juice into the wine first you have diluted the wine volume slightly so that when you put some of the first mixture back into the juice bowl you are actually putting a lesser amount of wine back into the juice bowl.

I don't really know if this is right but I think I could use a drink now !

If the pitcher is equal to or greater than the volume of the bowls then the result will be exactly 50/50. Anything less and the wine bowl will contain more of the real stuff.

I like John's answer. After you have added non-wine to the wine, what you return to the non-wine bowl has only some wine in it so you are adding less wine back into the non-wine bowl.

It was a trick question, we don't have parties with non-alcholic beverages. NO, Really.

John, Sharon, and Dan didn't take long. Equal amounts were transferred. Assume each punchbowl contained 100 units and the pitcher was 10 units. The pitcher removes 10 units of grape juice, and the grape juice punchbowl now has 90 units and the wine punchbowl has 100 units of wine and 10 units of water. With 110 units in the wine punchbowl the pitcher will transfer 10 units of the wine/grape juice mixture, which transfers to the grape juice punchbowl 9 1/11 units of wine and 10/11 units of grape juice. The grape juice punchbowl will then contain 90 10/11 of grape juice and 9 1/11 units of wine and the wine punchbowl will contain 90 10/11 of wine and 9 1/11 units of water. Fun huh?
