Sometimes the item itself was made into a weapon. Cranked chisels, checkering tool(s) also figured into the making.

The season I was referring to is hunting season. John was flirting with the answer mightily. My search was for gunstock maker. The crossbow certainly had on a stock but used other stuff too so I'm awarding 1/2 a star. The float (in this case a sort of half round file) was used for setting the barrel. The rubbing stick was a 12"-14" flat stick with leather attached and charged with fine abrasive to polish and smooth the wood. A shovel for gunstockers is basically a cranked neck gouge. And a bend board has two verrtical posts and works like a vertical winding stick to make certain that the barrel of the gun and the stock align properly. Indians used unfinished or finished gunstocks to mount blades for their tomahawks, and checkering tools and cranked neck chisels provided grip and decoration, and a way to hollow out wood to fit the trigger, locks, patch and back plates.
