This little evergreen projected English power in the 1200's through 1600's although it was also used much earlier. What evergreen was it? What was made of it to bring such acclaim? What properties made it so?

Yew wouldn't want me to answer so early. It might spring back at me with some strength.

I've actually seen pictures of gardeners standing on 20' tall ones while giving them a trim...much like standing on a wall.

Yew should take a long bow for this one. Your heart wood withstand great compression, while some sap wood be elastic.

Actually all three responses are correct. Congrats. I got to git a new box-o-stars. Yew is the evergreen, long bow is the device, as stated a laminate of the various sections of yew wood for low compression and high spring is the remainder. Yew wood is a early slow grower but will reach 12 feet in 20 years. They grow for long life span with 300 years possible.

Fifteen aimed (well, sort of) shots per minute, per archer, was the rate of fire toward the enemy at 300 yards to seventy five yards (about six minutes where no return fire was possible). After that crossbows and guns could be employed. Trained long bow men could drop an arrow into a ten yard radius at max range which was plenty good enough when there were enough arrows and archers available and groups of massed enemy. The arrows were heavy and could penetrate reasonably well. Try dodging raindrops while running over rough ground or riding a horse.
The longbow�s draw (pull weight) was 60-120 pounds. Archers had to be highly trained and well conditioned to sustain the strain of firing up to 15 times per minute in battle. Although claims that longbowmen could put an arrow through a helmet visor at 200 yards may be exaggerated, the weapon�s true battlefield advantage was its ability to create a deadly hailstorm of arrows � 5,000 longbowmen could rain down 30,000-75,000 missiles per minute on their opponents.
Archers carried 60-72 arrows into battle, less than 10 minutes� worth of ammunition. Young boys, therefore, scurried back and forth among the archers to keep them resupplied during combat. In addition the arrows were too long to fit other bows so few arrows were used in return (unless the enemy had long bows too-few did).
