Taking advantage of wind by building angled slots in walls, the Persians, and later with improvements like the Chinese invented angled sails, wind mills using various designs pumped water and ground grain since the early 1000�s. However in the mid 16th century in England, Edmund Lee, a blacksmith invented a device that increased the efficiency of operating a windmill. What did he invent? What did the invention do?

Part two. A millwright used hands and head. With what two skills did he apprentice in the operation of a windmill?

Part one. Fantail � a little windmill mounted at right angles to the sails, at the rear of the windmill, which turned the cap (the rotating part of a windmill that housed the blades or sweeps) automatically to bring it into the wind. The fantail was patented in 1745 by Edmund Lee, a blacksmith working at Brockmill Forge near Wigan, England, and perfected on mills around the end of the eighteenth century. Fantails are found on all types of traditional windmills. They are more common in England, Denmark and Germany than in other parts of Europe, and are little-known on windmills elsewhere except where English millwrighting traditions were in evidence.

The rotating fantail turns the cap of windmill ( in a stretch it looks somewhat like a helicopter tail rotor) via a system of gearing to a toothed rack around the top of the mill tower, or to wheels running on the ground in the case of a post mill. It does so until the fantail sails are oriented parallel to the wind. When this occurs the wind can no longer move the fantail and the cap is aligned so that the main sails are in the optimal perpendicular orientation, producing maximum power for the mill.

Part two. Millwrights were apprenticed by studying gear ratios (head) in order to adjust the rate of turning of the various gears for the drawing of water or milling of grain. Millwrights were also trained as carpenters and the setter of machinery (hands). They regularly operated the windmill while the Miller was often the owner and accountant as they, like a modern day agent, took as a fee 10% of the material milled. they also took what was spilled in the process so 10% was only a starting fee to the unsuspecting farmer.

Note: Dusty Miller the "fuzzy" white accent garden plant gets its name from the powdery appearance of the old time Millers who were often coated head to feet in white flour dust.
