Leonardo was a great inventor, but also a keen observer. In addition to his own ideas, his notebooks contain many sketches of technology that fascinated him.
The sketch below is of a rotating construction crane designed to hoist things to the top of a cathedral dome. This was a major engineering achievement for that time. Leonardo observed this machine in operation during his apprenticeship and made many sketches of its operating details.
Who was the inventor?

The architect...err...um...I mean woodworker in me tells me that if I design something that is tricky to build I might need to make a jig to help accomplish the task.

If he saw it during apprenticeship he was likely with V, but my opinion is the crane inventor was LBA--even though it never got off "paper" as he never actually built any of the devices he designed.

But you are correct that it was during his apprenticeship with Andrea del Verrochio.

As several of you figured out, the name I was looking for was Filippo Brunelleschi.
As architect of the 'duomo' of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Brunelleschi also had to solve many engineering problems related to the construction of the dome. The crane was one of his many innovative solutions.
