Brrrrr! Chilly Humpday Triviola
It's nippy here in the foothills of Mount Level today...but I thawed my brain for this question....
Lightship masts were obviously used to hold sails. But sailors also found them very useful for another purpose...what was it?

This is probably too obvious, but remembering my days in the Navy - serving in the Navigation division aboard ship, would the answer your looking for be: Hoisting and supporting lights (hence the name "lightships") at night and large colored signal devices during the day for navigational purposes - usually to mark channel intrances and/or dangerous areas?

I believe you are correct about that being another use of lightship masts but I am seeking something more relivant to this site.

The answer I was looking for is Nantucket Lightship Baskets. They were unusual because they were made on forms, often by sailors who used masts for the source of their forms. Here is a link for more of the story:

I guess my Nantucket (not involving a limerick) answer was to obscure, OH yeah I had to google and that don't count ;-) I even found that same website.
