"The" or " A" scuttlebutt

I think I need to go hang out at the ______to get the days gossip before I can answer this one.

See, I told you it was easy. The scuttlebut is a wooden cask that was used to hold drinking water. The cask itself is called a butt, and scuttle means to put a hole in something like tapping the cask.

What's the Sucttlebutt, as in gossip or rumor. I did a stretch in Uncles canoe club 'bout 35 years ago.
