of the Smooth Sumac from birds talking while on my branches. I believe the bird came from the east, I'm growing in Okla. From the way I understand human talk about me, they call me a trash tree. Well I can tell you some of those burly looking folks look like trash to me also.

those are my foreign friends, that I share some space with, although they are often up the hill a little, the squirrels tells me they are on the edge of the forest a lot around here, as in an invader. But since American is a mixing pot of culture, it's alright, I guess. But, kinda keep it quite, I think those aianthus guys stink to high heavens, : ' >.

It's kinda nice being a trash tree it normally keeps most humans away from me with them there tree killers. But there's a few dizzy type humans that talk about turning alot, that carry them there tree killers that have cut my brother and sister, RIP. But, haha, we often come back from our root spouts. If I had any red apples, I'd throw them, at those two-legged critters. The only red I have is spotchs in my bones.

The red was what gave me the idea. I remembered some threads some time ago about the pretty red streaks in some box elder boards and blanks.

My Father in law has a box elder tree in his back yard that is almost solid burl. It is getting old and will probably have to come down one of these days. I plan to try to get some chunks of it when it does.

I figured the red and turners would do the trick.

I had to go out and ID a yard tree this week. First thing I noticed was the green twigs, I thought sassafrass(sp?), but the twigs had opposite branching, and not root beer smell, my brain was not connecting. Opposite twig patterns around here is: dogwood, maple or ash. The tree was 3-4' in dbh, no dogwood or if it is, a world champ. Took a twig sample and walking back to the truck, there was another tree with the same twigs. This tree has some maple seeds still hanging, Duh! I heard once, folks call them a 3-leaf ash.

Yea, box elders grows fast and have pretty weak wood. Any injury into the bark I would suspect decay. Don't let your FIL's box elder go to far.
