Monday-oh for another day off

Since early times the Dutch have reclaimed land from the sea. A particular wood is used to build the dykes and form thick undersea matresses to prevent scouring of the dyke by waves over time. What wood is used?

Re: Monday answer

Purdy darn quick. No foolin youse guys. Ray is correct. Willow stems are woven into two foot thick mats on shore. They then are floated into position, sunk with rocks. The natural flexibility of the willow allows the mat to flex with the contours of the sea-bed and when underwater they are resistant to rot. They weave of the stems also help diddipate the wave action. The dykes themselves are of a sand core covered with boulder clay.
