The Chinese write and print up and down rather than left to right. Why?

Total WAG. Does it have anything to do with the fact that they traditionally used a brush and ink. Printing down would tend to make for less chance of smearing what you have already done.

Might it have anything to do with which way the paper is rolled and unrolled to reveal the writing?
