Monday
In the 1920's a state in the Northeast had one of the biggest manufactured furniture making meccas. Over thirty five manufacturers were located in one town. I don't know of any in business there today. What is the name of the town. Points if you can think of any of the furniture companies?

I suspect that some of you are thinking of Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, but the state is New York, and the town is NOT New York

Gary -- I was just about to say Gardner MA. Guess that doesn't fit the bill since I believe they still have some manufacturing going on there.

Had I not spent summers at Lake Chautauqua I would not have made any connection between furniture and one of my favorite places, Jamestown, NY. By one count from a recently located Schiffer book showing manufactured furniture, the number of furniture manufacturers (including at least two glass places for mirrors and case fronts) numbered forty. Companies like Maddox, Atlas, Jamestown Chair, Tillotson, Jamestown Case Goods Company, Davis, National Furniture, Elite, Herrick, Star Furniture, Elk, Allied Furniture, Supreme, Acme, Bailey Table, and many more made their home there. I can�t explain why there, but they were. Look around and if you have furniture of that era I�d guess some of it is from Jamestown. If you ever want some traditional/reproduction case pieces you can find lots of very nice stuff is still there and relatively inexpensive. By the way, other big furniture centers of the time were Rockford, IL, and Grand Rapids, MI.
