This isn't wood related, but it is interesting nonetheless.
One evening in November of 1883, the fire department in Poughkeepsie, New York wass called out to battle a large blaze. It tutned out not to be a fire at all.
What world famous historical event triggered this false alarm?

The eruption of Mt. Krakatoa some 3 months earlier pumped millions of tons of ash into the upper atmosphere. This created the perfect conditions for spectacular, even firey, sunsets.

When Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillippines erupted in 1991, it, too, made for some beautiful sunsets. I flew back to NC from NYC one night that Fall at sunset and saw "the sky on fire" as a backdrop to NYC lit up at dusk. It was an awe inspiring sight! Because our plane ascended to about 25000 feet on climb out, we were able to view the sunset until our initial approach into RDU. My seat was, serendipitously, on the port side of the plane by the window. In the hundreds of thousands of miles I flew, that was the most spectacular view I ever had from an airplane.

As a member of a volunteer fire department in the Colorado mountians I was called out one night for a fire reported to be on the north side of a certian mountian. The reporting party couldn't see the fire itself but a tremendous glow. when I looked I could see the glow but it was behind a different mountian. Calls kept coming in to dispatch with the same description but different locations. I finallly realized it was the northern lights, seldom seen this far south. I was also called out a couple of times for moonrise.
