Even at todays prices that would be an expensive nail. What does 'penny' mean in this context?
The abbreviation for 'penny' is 'd' - as in '16d'.
What does the 'd' stand for?

Does the "d" come from the old symbol forthe British penny, coming from the word denarius which was a Roman coin?
