Having spent nearly 3 months in that beautiful city in 1953-1954 and remembering a few visits to Japanese homes I always remember their passion for the cleanliness and condition of their floors. That is why all footwear was left outside the house, (real pain when you are wearing Army issued Combat Boots). So my not so WAG is Flooring.

If this is correct I hope the BOX has clean a floor.

With the exception of the pine-plank floors in the hallways and kitchen, all the floors are covered with tatami mats.

Not sure what they used in the timber-frame joinery, but the shoji screens and trim are pinned with bamboo.

Hint - In modern construction, these are usually made of aluminum or plastic.

How about the area around the BENJO-??, I think that is what it is called. A Japanese style toilet.

And the Benjo too.

This particular construction detail graces every room in the house, from Genkan (entry hall) to Benjo (bathroom).

It sounds like you're leaning toward door frames and the tracks the doors slide along. The smooth sliding and wear-resistance of a hardwood would seem to suggest this.
