Tuesday trivia
I've been reading an interesting book about the history of the Kentucky river that meanders through central KY from its start in eastern KY. Log rafts up to 80 feet long were once floated down to the mills during the spring floods which the locals refered to as _____ not as floods. Not much of a wood related question I know...hmmm.... Why were most of the logs in the rafts poplar and basswood when oak, walnut and hickory were just as abundant?

The high spring flood waters were refered to as "tides". Too many "sinker" logs in your raft would make it ride low in the water and be hard to steer. Oak, hikory and walnut logs do not ride high in the water as well as poplar and basswood logs.
