Thursday trivia extra

Here is an extra one just for fun:

What is this used for and what is it called? The name is a 10 letter word.

Re: Thursday trivia extra

I can guess what it is used for, but I'm drawing a blank on the 10-letter name. Is it also known by a two word name (6+6)?

On reflection

(not to mention some refraction) this can't be a "camera lucida" or "graph-o-scope" as I originally thought. The front element is a lens.

I'm guessing that it is a viewer for small prints or photographs.

sorta, but not quite close enough;-)

Aha!

It's a "zograscope" - for viewing "vue d'optiques" (hand colored engravings). The lens/mirror assembly gave the pictures an illusion of depth.

Thanks for the question.
