The first patent for plywood as a product unto itself (John Mayo of NYC in 1865) never really got commercialized.

The modern softwood plywood industry got its start at the 1905 Worlds Fair in Portland.

My research...

leads that Bill is on the right path. Plywood (glued laminated sections of wood laid cross grain) were found in Egypt, displayed and dated 3500 years ago. Veneer practitioners were also plywood makers as early as the 16th century. John Mayo of New York got the U.S. patent (12/26/1865) but Emmanuel Nobel (Alfred's Father) earlier that same year got the credit for the "peeler" lathe enabling plywood to be made--which was his intention for making the lathe in the first place--to make wood stronger.

According to the APA, plywood was invented in 1905, in Portland Oregon. Estimated about 825,000,000,000 square feet of plywood has been produced since then.

Yes I know that the ancient Egyptians and a whole lot of other groups have made products like plywood but for some reason they do not want to call it plywood. They even mentioned the others on there website. If you want to argue about it talk to the APA.
