My bedridden grannie had an upholstered chair in her room, back in England, that I'm sure served the same purpose. She called it a commode, although I don't see how that fits the question.

The name has something to do with how it works;-) Think of a name used today, but sorta opposite. It is two words.

It obviously doesn't flush and the opposite of getting rid of the contents is to keep or hold so is this logic on the right track?

Aside: Think about this

a commode is also a womens high head dress worn in the 1700s to increase the apparent length of a womens head (think 16th century Versailles or Marge Simpson). Those high hairstyles were possible by the use of sticking ones head in a commode. Oh, those French! Go figure.
