Tuesday filler

If I wanted to get a big catch of fish, there is a type of tree that I might look for. What is the tree and why? (Of course, I would need to be careful that I did not end up in jail;-))

I have been woodworking for about 25 years now, and would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. My claim to fame (or infamy) has always been fixing stuff. I spent time in the Air Force in the 60's then went to work as an electronic technician for civil service. I finally got my EE, and being fed up with the civil service nonsense, took a job with Ford Motor Company until I went with the split to Visteon last year. I got interested in music and started playing in a bluegrass band. I wanted a new guitar, and that kind of led me into woodworking. I bought some books, a few tools, and built a guitar. Luckily, I didn't know any better than to try that as a first ever project. I still play it when I get a chance, so it must not be too bad if it can live for over 20 years. After a stint in Mexico for my job, I moved into a new house and built a small shop. Since then I have been collecting tools and skills, probably more of the former than the latter ;-). Finding this site has done more for my skills and enjoyment than anything else. I have learned a lot and really enjoy the friendships that I have made here. I have been married to LOML (Lori) for 32 years now and have 6 kids. When they are all gone, I want to get a 1 bedroom house (so there is not room for them to move back in) and at least a 6 car heated/air conditioned garage for a shop. (Dream on...)

I was thinking it was a big gunny-sack of walnuts with the husk repeadedly slamed against concrete. I have no first-hand knowledge of the though.

I don't think that oak would do it. If I were going to try another, it would be Herculese- Club. Also known as toothache-tree or tingle-tongue. Our ancestors used it to numb their last hurting tooth by mushing up a couple of leaves and holding it against the painful spot with their tongue, which would also be numbed.

There is a line of them in a fence-row along a path where I ride my bike. All 6 of them died all at once about 2 years ago. There are a few others about five miles upstream that appear to be following suite. This is not a good sign I don't think. I have wondered if researchers have studied this tree as of late.

Good evening all, around here when "they" treat a lake they use Rottenone sp? Don't know what tree it comes from, if it comes from a tree.

From your comments so far, this probably isn't what you're looking for, but there is a tree called "Catalpa Bignonioides" which annually hosts catapillars which make terrific bait . . . hence one of it's common names, the "Fish Bait Tree".

That's the one I was thinking of too.

Around here those worms get a lot of use. But the tree and worms are usually misnamed around here because of the Catawba river near by.

Ok...but...but....

I see what you are after. However my buddy who fishes professionally for the local State Surveys for research tells me the acorn poisoning does occur and is a trick that some guys use to kill fish. I saw walnuts posted too and I am not sure about them. At any rate, it's illegal in these parts. FYI

There are actually quite a few items that could be used for this. This ust happened to be the one I was looking for;-) It is probably ilegal in most places. Just thought that it was an interesting "second use" for dogwood.
