Given Mr. Dan a break
I know of two trees in the eastern hardwood forest that have a whitest sap. You can pull a leaf off the tree and during most of the growing season you can see white, milk colored sap, latex, on the end of the leaf stem. There are probably more trees that have this latex sap. I use this as a positive ID for some trees.
What tree(s) do you know has this trait?

One tree of this type has three effective ways of destroying your lawn: dense summer shade, a smothering blanket of fall leaves, and a choking network of surface roots. There are mosses that will survive this onslaught, so treasure them. The prolific seedlings also wreck havoc in the yard and surrounding garden. When you break a leaf stem yo will see white sap.

My two are: one needled, one leafed, both can be hinted by the flag of Poland, sound boards for one, interior trim for the other, one is foreign one native.

Sounds like the elusive milkweed tree to me. They only grow about 3 feet tall here in central Ohio.

The two trees I'm referring to, both have yellow heartwood. A dead give-away.

My two are Norway Maple (Acer platanoides--Crimson King)and the White Pine (Pinus strobus). Strangler vines and rubber trees (both ficus) also have white sap but are not normally part of the eastern forest.

OK Dale, I checked you out. I pulled some leaves off one of my mulberry trees today. No white sap, and actually no sap. Looked nice and green. Could it be because we're in the middle of a drought?
Another tree w/white sap!
The Norway Maple supposedly has white sap if you breal a leaf off its stem.

I plucked a mulberry leave today myself, I talked myself into seeing a faint white sap. I assure you they will sap white. Maybe this time of the year, when conditions are such..???. Pluck a leave once a month and you will eventually fine the white sap, I know early spring works...Dale
