I first thought that you said Greek not geek. I belong to a measurement society that places the inventor in the 17th century. There are skeletons in the past but I prefer:

preacher + invoice + nil + crimson.

The Reverend William Oughtred is commonly acknowledged as the originator of the first real slide-rule.
