Our forum software comes from a public GitHub repository (a shared online place where the official code is kept and updated by the project’s maintainers).

Anyone can make temporary changes on our own server—for example, to try out a feature someone requested. Those local changes work for a while.

But the next time we update the forum to the latest official version from GitHub, any changes that were not added to that official repository get wiped out and replaced by the clean official code.

So:

• Local tweaks = temporary.

• Changes that get reviewed and accepted into the GitHub repo = permanent (they stay after every future update).

I can make the temporary changes people ask for, but unless the official project accepts them, they will disappear the next time we upgrade. Manually re-doing every custom change after every update is possible but slow and error-prone, so I generally don’t do it.

That was the case with the forum style. At some point during revision updates, the default became the dark style. But there are always two choices -- light or dark -- that can be set by registered users plus lots of other options if you want to fine-tune things from your Profile.

But thanks for your feedback. I view designing and maintaining the website as I do woodworking. The first dovetail will not be perfect. The first thing turned on a lathe will probably suck and land you in the ER. It's a process of learning, discussing, sharing, and trying new things. And that process leads to things gradually getting better.
