Here is another example of re-use of previously made wood items
This is two panels salvaged from an 18th century desk attributed to R.J. Horner Co. in NYC. Most of the rest of the desk was firewood but these carvings were so well done I had to preserve them to honor the long-ago carver.
Panels were carefully trimmed, then joined and framed. approx. 20"x40". The carvings were not "touched" so, aside from a gentle cleaning, the original finish has been preserved.
Title is "Griffins' March"

I think it would have been a big mistake to include those with the firewood components.
Awesome job Mark.
Re: Repurposing
Edited #3Thanks, Ellis,
I had originally rescued the desk when an old hotel was set for demolition. Finally had it appraised by a couple of antique dealers who informed it would cost more to move than it would bring at auction. Oh well
Here's the original desk
I was surprised at the amount of secondary wood (poplar) used in the piece.
I also saved the 1-piece 30x50" mahogany desk top
with a view to use as a new table or desk.
Unfortunately, the top took a beating over the years and will have to be carefully refinished.
Re: Repurposing
#4Great job Mark. Well worth the effort to save some beautiful carvings and what will someday be a great top on whatever you decide to make out of it. Thanks for sharing.

I had originally thought about using the piece as a "frieze" over a door in my daughter's house. She's a huge Harry Potter fan, but her ceilings aren't high enough so I couldn't engineer a "Griffindore". She's hinted that she may want it in her soon-to-be new office.
