What tools, supplies, or services have earned a place in your shop?

There comes a time in every woodworker’s life when you stop buying promises and start relying on what’s proven.

We’ve all got a few things in the shop that didn’t come from a catalog description or a YouTube demonstration—but from use. Day in, day out. The kind of tool or supplier that, after a while, you quit thinking about because it just does what it’s supposed to do.

That’s what we’re after here.

If you’ve got a tool, a finish, a supplier, or even a service that’s treated you right over time, post it. Include a link if you can, but more important—tell us what it’s done for you. What problem it solved, how long you’ve used it, and whether it’s held up to honest work.

A few ground rules, just to keep this from turning into a carnival:

  • Recommend only what you’ve actually used

  • Tell us why it earned your confidence

  • If you have any connection to the product or seller, say so plainly

This isn’t about the latest thing or the loudest claims. It’s about the quiet reliability that earns a permanent place on the shelf.

If enough good information comes in, we’ll gather it up and make something lasting out of it.

At 86 I have used a good many hand planes during my lifetime. My favorite and go to plane is my well tuned Stanley 3C.  While I have many other planes in my assortment, I prefer the 3C for general plane work and smoothing.  I have small hands and this plane fits me real well.  While most use the #4, my personal preference is the 3C.  Whatever floats your boat.  My 2 cents worth.

MINWAX oil-based poly. The most versatile, trouble-free, easy-to-apply and long-lasting finish I've ever used in 60 years of amateur use. I've tried a host of others, including some outrageously-priced "fine" finishes (varnish, lacquer,  BLO, shellac, other poly, and Waterlox) and have always returned to Minwax.

My current favorite is Target EM8000cv Waterborne conversion varnish.  Easy to apply, tough and durable.  Second choice is Target EM6000 waterborne lacquer.
