The Squonk is one of the strangest and saddest creatures in American folklore.
It comes from the lumber camps of northern Pennsylvania, especially the Hemlock forests, and was first recorded in 1910 in a book called Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods by William T. Cox. According to legend, the Squonk is covered in ill-fitting skin, warts, and blemishes. It is said to be so ashamed of its appearance that it hides from everyone and spends most of its time crying.
Hunters supposedly tracked it by following the sound of its sobbing or the trail of tears it left behind. But catching one was nearly impossible. The story says that if cornered or captured, the Squonk would dissolve into a puddle of tears, leaving nothing behind but sadness and bubbles.
