Nice build.  I like the clean lines.  One area where I learned the hard way is that open-ended shelves are a pain for books falling through the opening.  I bought a shelf unit and have had to jury-rig end barriers to keep the end books from falling out.

The “proud shelves” here refers to the part of each shelf that is raised above the support—they’re “proud” of the surface.  It’s kind of an odd usage.  More frequently, it might be used when referring to a dowel plugging a screw hole:  “I plugged the hole with a dowel, then sawed off what was proud of the surface, and sanded it smooth.”

I just use a couple of painted bricks.  :D
