Scrap wood

Hi,
Had some scrap wood laying around. Made some small shelves:

What the...?

Was this constructed from a set of Rube Goldberg plans printed on a Mobius strip? :)

The subtle curves on the vertical pieces add a lot to the effectiveness of this design. The shelves seem to be fairly small, judging from the size of the chair seat. What are the dimensions?

Regarding Peter's comment, I once did a shop improvement using "available materials," meaning whatever I could find in the shop that might work. The architect who did our drawings said, "This has a sophisticated Rube Goldberg quality to it that I like." I consider it one of the best critiques of any of my projects.

P.S. Does anyone know who Rube Goldberg was except us old guys?

Thanks,

The dimensions are: 25cm/10inch by 38/15 and 32/13 by 50/20.
Have not heard of Rube Goldberg, have to google!!

I like it.  I tend to like to see symmetry and order, simplicity and elegance in general, but every once in a while I see something that throws some of those elements to the wayside and has a certain whimsical quality to it that draws me in, and I could see having in my own home.  This is one of those.  Well done and thanks for sharing it!

Have fun with Rube Goldberg.  Purdue University, just across the Wabash River from me, holds an annual competition.  The point of a Rube Goldberg machine is to accomplish an exceedingly simple task using many complicated steps.  The competition brings out some wonderful executions of creativity, engineering, design, and construction.  I’m sure you could find many videos online of the entries over the years.

P.S.  For Peter—I’m in dark mode on an iPad, running Safari, and there is a white-highlighted bit in Svante’s last post that is white or very light gray text, so I can’t see it at all.  I briefly switched to light mode (gah!) so I could read it, which I then could.  Don’t know if there’s a way to tweak the forum software to convert low-to-no-contrast elements to something with more contrast.

Perhaps I should have said "M.C. Etcher Plans" as my eyes were playing tricks on me when I tried to follow the construction...

My attempts to build shelves usually turn out like this :(

I like those a lot, nice work as always!

My daughter, a dedicated "plant lady", asked for something to hold the myriad pots that seem to grow or subdivide over night.
Got rid of a whole lot of shorts and cut-offs with this.

@Jason Roehl in Lafayette, IN,

Thanks.

It's because the post contains specifications for colors and font sizes. That is a problem for  allowing this when offering different "themes" for a site. The ones specified in the post will take precedence over those of the theme and will sometime conflict, especially when there is a difference in theme backgrounds. I will edit the post to remove the inline background color specifications.

Thanks,

The dimensions are: 25cm/10inch by 38/15 and 32/13 by 50/20.
