I had a bench chisel set that I bought as a teenager in the early 60's from a local hardware. Unfortunately, someone decided they needed them more than I did about 20 or 25 years ago and was able to make off with 3 of the 4. Every couple of years I look at Ebay and look for matches with no success. There was no brand name on them. There is an etch on the blade,"Hi Test Dropforged Finland". So along comes ChatGPT, and I decided to see if it could ID the maker. Amazingly in about 3 minutes of back and forth, it came up with the following: " Your chisel is almost certainly a Kellokoski (Finland) made bench chisel, imported to the U.S. in the early 1960s and sold under a generic or private hardware store brand. The “Hi Test Dropforged Finland” etch and red Tenite handle are strong indicators of Finnish manufacture during this period.
🔍 Key Identifiers:
Blade Etch:
Clearly reads: “HI-TEST DROPFORGED FINLAND”
This was a hallmark marking used by Kellokoski Oy, which exported chisels under generic or hardware-store brands.
Handle:
Red Tenite plastic, with vertical fluting and a rounded rectangular cross-section.
Very similar to early plastic-handled models made for Craftsman, Wards, True Temper, and others — but not branded.
Construction:
One-piece forged tang design inserted into a molded handle.
The shoulder and blade shape matches 1960s Finnish export chisels.
🏭 Manufacturer Background:
Kellokoski Oy was one of the major Finnish toolmakers before its acquisition by Fiskars in the mid-1960s.
Tools like yours were typically sold through local hardware stores in the U.S. and Canada.
These chisels were known for tough, drop-forged carbon steel blades and heat-resistant plastic handles (Tenite or similar).

Since these were the first woodworking tools I ever owned, I have a sentimental attachment and would like to fill out the set.
