No correct answer to this, for as far as I know, no one knows why this is. But we have smart readers, and perhaps some of you would like to speculate?

I find quantum physics to be like imaginary numbers - evidence to me that our understanding & mathematics are insufficient to explain or describe the world around us in all regards.  As we cannot explain the wave vs particle duality of light (and other EM energy) then why should it be surprising to see this effect with the polarizing filters?  Clearly we do not understand light as well as we would like to think we do!

I have yet to see a paradox that is really a paradox - something that cannot be explained by acknowledging that we do not yet understand the question.

I like the last of those quotes the best - it says what I was trying to say much more succinctly! :D 
I would only add "and paradoxes show the gaps in that knowledge"
