Re: PowerBoot

Just another overpriced and not very practical gimmick.

I agree with Dave; it's the kind of thing they bring out near Father's Day for the kids or spouse to buy for the difficult-to-buy-for man.

I can see the practicality of it. I have worked as a field engineer to diagnose and install IT hardware and wiring. Most of it was in hospitals and secured areas (prisons, restricted military and government facilities) where bringing tools into facility wasn't easy. Not having something because I left it in the vehicle or set it down somewhere else on the job site was a frequent frustration, probably because I have the attention span of a squirrel on crack. I was always looking for ways to have what I need, without dragging numerous toolboxes around. I'm lazy and weak.

So this makes sense to me. If the $40 price seems high, I would contrast it with spending 30 minutes hunting around or going out of the facility back to my truck, and wondering if the client should pay for my forgetfulness at $200 an hour. And putting pointy sharp drywall screws in the magnetic base for easy access seems preferable to putting them in your pants pocket where they tend to cut through the pocket and end up in your underwear. Or so I've heard.  :P

So yeah, I would probably order one or two and use 'em I were still doing that type of work. It seems well thought out, where it can be permanently mounted or "switched" between batteries. For someone who does short on-call jobs where things can be rushed and stuff tends to get forgotten or lost, I can see the benefits.

Just my two cents. That and five dollars will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Hello Peter,
I just happened upon your post about PowerBoot. What you shared regarding its practicality is exactly the reason my wife and I developed this idea into the product we've made available. We've heard so many testimonies about the time-saving aspect equating to obvious money savings on the job. One of our customers who is a master carpenter in the Annapolis, MD area told us that he bent a jigsaw blade working on a big project and that if he had a PowerBoot on his tool, it would've been a ten second blade replacement. Instead, he had to walk back to his work truck and was met with several conversations along the way. By the time he was back to what he was doing, he lost 20 minutes. It's not for everyone but PowerBoot has saved me a lot of time and aggravation working on my own rental properties as well as around my home. Anyway, just wanted to thank you for bringing PowerBoot to the attention of the Wood Central Forum readers.

Not a contractor but as somebody who takes tools like a drill, etc. from the basement to work outside and does have sharp screws, extra drill bits, in my pocket, I can see that this product could indeed be useful to eliminate return trips to the basement.
Also, it might stop my wife from mentioning with a nasty look that she found some screws and funny looking things in the bottom of the washing machine.

Wouldn't it make more sense if the bit case was wearable rather than on the tool?

@David Weaver,

Sometimes yes, and I tried that but that's another thing to remember to put on and I would often forget.

I'd definitely leave it off of the battery, but everyone works different ways. the easiest way for me to remember what I'm using is to put it in my mouth, but that tastes funny and at some point when you get more than two things in your mouth (mind you, never am I walking on a ladder or doing something where danger of reflex and choking would be a problem with stuff flying in), it gets hard to hold them!

To each their own, though - not dogging the efforts of the maker, just not a tool for me. Neither is a mac computer.
