Interesting topic over on FOG about this.

Do any of you use an EV as either a work or personal vehicle? When I was still working as a contracted field engineer and driving all over the SE US, I bought a used one for $12K ($50K new) and it saved me a ton of money. My travel costs were fixed by contract, and the more I could save on fuel costs the more that ended up in my pocket. I still have it and have had almost zero issues. It's a hybrid, or what GM referred to as an "extended range EV." Range was 37 miles on a full charge, which was deemed sufficient for most daily commutes, but after that the ICE kicks in as a power source. The motor switches from a motor to a generator when the engine is running using a planetary gear system. So, I could drive from the east coast to California with no "range anxiety." If I run out of juice, the ICE will power me to wherever I need to go.
The big advantage of EVs and hybrids is regeneration IMO, which is storing the energy of deceleration. That is energy that is normally wasted and results in heat and wear. With almost 200K miles, the brake pads on my car still look almost new.
