Simple and effective. I've experimented with local bamboo. It grows like a weed. But you need a variety that's weather resistant. The stuff I tried rotted away within a year. 
My next experiment will be Aussie hardwood split shingle roofing.

I lived in Taiwan in the early '80s for three years, as a child.  I remember seeing a lot of this type of roof, particularly in the rural, southern portions of the island.  More "modern" housing had clay tile roofs--fashioned in a similar way.
