There is money to be made in engineering fame and " genius". Lots of money.
So just like any other market, woodworking has its opinion moulding machine. The myth maker's. The marketing department.
They need relateable front men and women to sell their version of desirable, valuable, the best.
Not too show biz though. The target audience needs street cred and a down to earth folksie personality that engages without being sham wow.
Such fluff and nonsense doesn't fly with pro end users who buy based on feed back in real world use. The serious tool and machinery maker's know this and structure their products accordingly in terms of price, utility and quality.
The marketing strategy of the respected machinery maker's of the past was not the same as the fluff and puff of Felder, Sawstop, Grizzly, Festo etc.
The same is true of many of the woodworking Guru's.
Maloof and countless others who spun the bottle and sold out to sell up. They have created a market that sells redemption through the romance of being "authentic." But with the added kudos of Art status. The REAL craftsman, white hair, apron, leaning over a bench with his jack plane. A veritable icon of timeless integrity and quality.
You too can be that man ! You too can turn out timeless quality from your weatherboard studio. Be that respected decent chap that the corporate/ military/ government job wouldn't allow. The honest, humble kind and Zen wise cabinetmaker just like the one's you imagined in colonial Boston or that creosote black shack on the estuary where seagulls shit on tourists for a bag of hot chips.
Time to recreate yourself and be usefull in that garage you earned.
But you pride yourself on being middle class not trailer trash like that guy you knew at school who became a carpenter. You want your image curated by experts who speak YOUR language. No cussin' or girly pictures in some grotty low rent workshed at the ass end of town. It's got have collegiate gentility and Bon Ami. Bit of Golf club slash country club savour faire meets trouser lifting stare.
So you read Fine Woodworking magazine.
You go to the new breed of ground breaking young Turks on BoobTube who are bravely redefining woodwork so you don't have to feel to guilty about the lack of finished project's your wife keeps wondering will ever actually amount to anything.
The real craftsmen don't care to much for the patronising attitude they endure from their betters. Most bite their tongue out of necessity though. They have to indulge a customer's son in law who is convinced he is the next Chippendale once he retires from banking. Lol. But he wants to see your workshop so he can go one better. 😏
But not all hobby guy's are like that. A lot are retired fitter turner's. Straight up and down engineering types. These guys are capable realistic and practical. They want a change from cold hard oily metal but they enjoy rebuilding old woodworking machines for a keen price. Good for them. Respect 🙏.
Those guys are always welcome to visit my workspace. Truthfully you have to be predisposed to and have a knack for making things. Many simply don't so the brave marketeers hold their hand in Tube land and encourage them with indulgent bling tool purchases to decorate the wall's of their Taj Garage. Their man shed of dreams.
