Ask a professional what he thinks of a tool machine, timber, whatever.
His response will not be based on emotion.
It will be based on experience and hard nosed pragmatism. Generally speaking anyway.
The relationship is far more objective.
This is a problem for the hobby guy's who invest based on emotion and a curated market place of You tube influencers etc.
Their view of the trade is often but not always heavily romanticised.
Is this a bad thing ? No. It is simply what motivates their interest.
It's like the difference between a formula one racing driver in a Ferrari and a stock broker.
The pro driver knows how to push the limits without killing himself. But many stockbrokers end up wrapped around a power pole or tree if they drive as fast.
Money goes where it's needed and Ferrari sells dreams to rich people..
Same with woodworking machinery. A pro will be far more objective about the strengths and weaknesses of a given machine. He doesn't care about brand loyalty. If a particular Delta machine is in his experience kinda crappy he will tell you exactly why.
Japanese chisels ? There are really good ones and there are okay ones and some are garbage.
Clamps, same thing.
I have one Lie Nielsen plane. It's okay. I do use it now and then but as pretty as Bronze is, it's not an ideal metal for the application.
To soft. Their blades are okay. Hold a decent edge. But I use my Stanley 60.5 far more often.
Festo tool's. I got sucked in despite the insane prices. The air orbital was dead within a year. Total waste of money. Piece of crap. Same with the Electric one.
But festo has a genius marketing department and it still smokes people.
Their domino machine is popular because it's fast. I had to use one as an employee to make an organ case once. Such a flimsy joint. I never signed my name on it because I had no pride in its quality. It was a very shonky firm.
I refuse to give feedback that's not objective and honest. Don't be offended. It's just my opinion. If it works for you and fulfilling your needs ? Cool.
I'm hard on tools. Once i know their limits I work them at their limits. My focus is not the tools beauty. It's making something efficiently to a high standard with minimum time wasted. I'm simply not very patient with stuff when I know there is a better way.
Im always trying to improve accuracy and efficiency to maintain quality . But Ikea's model is built on low price and it sells.
It is what it is.
Wealthy people don't buy the shit they sell to us ! They want unique best quality artwork.
They can afford it.
My grandfather had a pair of Purdey shotguns. He could outshoot any landed gent in the county with the same brand of Bespoke gun ! But his shotguns were totally plain. He loaded his own cartridges.
Why was he such a good shot ? He was sent out poaching before puberty. On rich men's property. Why did the gentry turn a blind
eye ? Because they need men like him for special ops. It's a game and we are all players.
Fundamental difference between pro and hobby.
