Impartial review of my Felder panel/ shaper combination.

The only machine I have ever bought new and only because of hard nosed pragmatism rather than favoured choice. 
So be warned, by the end of this review you will certainly not be thinking I am promoting Felder.
Normally I do not like combination machines. Way to much time wasted switching functions and they are a compromise. Imho. But I wanted a single end tenoner as well as shaper so after much soul searching and calculating floor foot print I caved in and bought the KF7X. 
It's not an industrial grade machine but with careful use it serves a small shop okay. 
The dealer was furious when he delivered it because he saw all my other machines were Wadkin and being a blunt Austrian told me I  was wasting money on that old junk and should have got all Felder ! I laughed at him and told him my Wadkins would easily outperform and outlast any Felder he could offer. He then proved beyond doubt he was a salesman by failing to deliver it dialed in correctly. Everything was off. So I complained to head office in Austria with photographic proof of his incompetence. They ordered him back to fix the mess. He 
turned up screaming and shouting and slammed the sliding table back on its stops.
That was the last straw and I kicked him out, dialed it in myself. Luckily because I know what I'm doing there were no screw ups and no warranty issues down the track.
He lost the franchise soon after. Must have had mental health issues. Numerous other owner's had the same problems I found out.
Anyway, here's the thing with Felder. It's a modular system. The engineering is thus compromised rather than optimised.
The fence is okay but not great. The sliding table sags at its limits because it's not ridged enough or well supported enough.
With the 7.5hp motors I ordered it cuts well enough. The cross cut fence cradle needs constant checking. It drifts out of square for lack of stiffness. It's a shonky system, very badly designed.
 Dust extraction is okay. Shaper works okay. 
I make it work for me but I'm not in love with it. Frankly it was overpriced, overrated and has needed to be tweaked and re dialed several times. 
At the time though I could not find a good used Martin and or shaper that I liked and I needed to get in to production and make money. That's the only reason I bought the Felder. 
So for those of you who think I'm a smug bastard who reckons all his machines are 
" the best " , nope, I have several that I put up with and this machine is one of them. 
Would I recomend Felder to anyone ? No.
I wish I'd held out for something far better but as is so often the case, you make the best of what you have until something better comes along. 
Is there anything I do like about it ?
The router spindle is handy but needs a higher speed option. Bearings are all still original and tight. Original drive belts too.
This machine is 26 plus years old now.
As with all machines you become used to working around and with its shortcomings.
Not so with the Wadkins. 
The Delta drill press on the other hand is a Taiwanese copy of the earlier American version. Again it's okay but the variable speed drive is noisy and twitchy. Bad engineering again. 
Felder is good at marketing their products no doubt. But their intrinsic qualities are heavily compromised by very poor design and engineering that could so easily be fixed.
