Not mine but from a group about about rainwater collection. Each of these barrels is going to weight about 500 lbs when full. Are notched 4x4s sufficient? And the cuts in the 2x8s for the barrels create a weak link, and I would expect them to crack at the center barrel at some point in the future. Some are saying it's fine, others say he should have used 4x4s all around, or at least add center legs. Opinions?

I am interested in this because my plan is to retire to the jungle in a developing country where this will be necessary. Is there a conversion for how many bamboo stalks equal the strength of a 4x4? :)

I would use 6x6's for the legs notched on 2 sides to support the rails. That way solid woods supports the rails rather then screws.

Assuming there is at least 3-1/2" remaining in each 2 x 6's supporting the barrels and the total weight of water and drums is 1500 pounds, the beams will only sag ~0.1 inches.  I think they will last a long time.  The main weight is supported by the notches on the legs.

@Lee Schierer, Are they 2x6 or 2x8?  I originally posted 2x6, but then looking at it closer, they looked (to me) to be twice the width of the 4x4s.

I'm probably sounding like a total idiot, but that's OK. For those of you who have been putting up with me, I made it clear from the start that I am NOT a woodworker and know almost nothing about it or carpentry. And that the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Related, what is the deal with a 2x4 not actually being 2x4? I recall they once were, but now no longer are. Is this true of all dimensional lumber, where the actual dimensions have been "fudged"?

Are they referred to as 2x4s in countries that use metric?

"2x4 " refers to the initial rough sawn wood at the mill.  After milling and drying the boards are about 1 1/2 by 3 1/2.  1" finished lumber as actually 3/4" after being surface planed

While 2x6s can carry that weight, the barrel notches make them into about 2x2.  A center post notched to carry the weight would be a good idea.

Collecting rain water in Australia is big business. We have three water tanks for our house. Two sit directly on a concrete slab, the other sits on levelled gravel. Rain water makes the best cup of tea. Uses less soap for laundry and feels great when showering. Yes really. I will take some pics to prove it. Down sides. Keeping gutters clean, replacing filter's often. 
But it's worth it and water is a very valuable resource. Rain water is much better for vegetable beds and fruit trees.
Nice set up. I'm thinking of buying wine barrels to store water at the new house.
Cheaper than plastic if you can believe that.

The relevant numbers are the length of the supporting 2x6's their thickness (1.5 inches) and their depth (hard to tell from the picture but call it 2 inches). And the weight per support (1500/2). And assume a uniform load since their are three loads more or less evenly distributed. You also need to know what wood is being used.

Other things: the 4x4 posts can support many times that weight of about #375 each. I agree that notching the tops of the posts so the rails sit on post end grain is far superior to merely screwing or bolting the rails to the sides of the posts.

Also, it looks like those posts are sitting on flat rocks on the dirt. I'd feel better with some crushed rock for drainage and a concrete footer under those posts. Or a concrete deck pier.

Am I missing downstream fill lines to the other two barrels?

Easy solution for load capacity: Fill the barrels up and see what happens.

If you mount water tanks on wood eventually the weight and damp will eat the structure alive. Don't waste your money on concrete slabs either like this one. 
Nowadays everyone creates a level with coarse gravel and calls it good. The gravel provides good drainage too. 
Let gravity do the hard yards for you. The outlet is usually 5" above the bottom so that the weight of remaining water stops the tank getting blown away by heavy wind. It also acts as a sump for the inevitable sludge build up. Every six year's or so we take off the lid, tip the tank over and hose out the junk. Easy. It's what Taylor Swift would do down under. 
This is a typical set up for country homes.
Our other tank is fibreglass. Much bigger. We gravity re fill it from these two.

How come no wells? I am in USA, CT and I have what is called a shallow well. It is 95 feet deep. The pump is in my basement which helps when maintenance is needed.

Yes 2 x 4's used to be bigger.  This article will explain how lumber dimensions changed at the retail level.  History of 2 x 4's

We have a well but down under they are called Bores. Bore water quality varies widely. Some are to salty, some have to much iron, some have excess of certain minerals like manganese that make them unpottable. We had a well when we lived in America. Bit high in copper but good drinkable water.
Here our bore water is drinkable only after settling for a month or two to let the minerals settle out. 
Rain water is preferred but if we have to we use the bore water. 
In Oz, bores are a lottery. You could hit exceptional water or sulphur smelling iron laden crud. Salt is often a problem. 
We hit good quality but low volume. 
The problem in America is more likely pollution. Nitrates, PCB, pesticides.

You don't. You suck it up princess. Or you get one of them there fancy UV light sterilisation do Hickeys. 
Me ? I just spit out the large chunks on to the veggie patch and use the rest to gargle. It's cheaper than Listerine and has a pleasant discouraging effect on tax inspectors. You should try it. 
Down under you get tough real quick or die from spider bites and cold hearted Aussie women. It's kinda like Ohio with the gloves off.
