A baby rattle

Nice, Joe. I assume the glue line is at one of the burned lines and not where it meets at the handle. Been about a dozen years since I last made one of those. Mine were all double ended - like a mini dumbbell.
Nice, Joe. Good grain match across the joint
That's excellent looking. Really dandy!
Beautiful work.
Not trying to rain on the parade, but baby rattle shapes have been a concern to the extent some turners stopped making them for sale. Most of this stemmed from choking hazard, either the rattle shape or the "rattle" contents should the rattle break apart.
This outlines some regulations for rattles made for sale but the safety issues don't stop at sale or no sale.

I can't tell the dimensions from the photo but assuming the ball is of sufficient size, I'd be concerned about the flare at the bottom of the handle mentioned in the F963 paragraph. The ones that meet the standard tend to be a dumbbell shape.
it could have a pommel or hoop added to the bottom that would prevent choking, too. never thought about it but would guess the hoop was on some of the kids' stuff not to grab, but to be too big to get in a mouth.
Nicely done Joe! I always make mine with a half-dozen corn kernels inside. Despite the glue, some babies are determined and the rattles do sometimes get broken. The kernels are not a problem if ingested.
Thanks everyone. Laughing at Mark's grain match comment. I didn't even try. Either, I got lucky and hit it or the burl made it not relevant. Yes, the join is a burn line on the bulb. The bulb is about 2"D. Bill, I won't be going into rattle production - too many rules and risks, I think. I guess I need to do a product recall.
Have you ever noticed that the AAW Journal never has articles about electrical repairs/modifications or about chainsaws? I wrote a lengthy article about replacing the VFD on my lathe and was rejected as too risky. Mark Baker said no thanks for "Woodturning" magazine too. Same reason. Don't be waiting for the Graeme Priddle Vaporizor "how-to" in any publication.
Joe, I gave an impromptu talk at one of my club meetings about my experiences and the ways that an Apple watch can be life-saving for people who spend long periods alone in the shop. It was totally off the cuff, but the information I mentioned was compelling enough that at least nine people who were there went out and purchased smart watches, and one of them purchased another one for his wife.
A club president from another club was there and he asked me to put my remarks into the form of an article for his club newsletter, and I did that. Later several other clubs saw the article and asked if they could re-print the article in their newsletters and I said of course. Several people suggested that I send it in to the AAW Journal so I did that. The Journal editor published it, but only after he cut out more than half of the article which destroyed the impact and made it irrelevant.

All legal in Oregon
Hey Ric, Would you please post the link to the real article or send me a copy? I'm also asking permission to add it into our clube newsletter.
Thanks
Joe

Enjoy,

Whether or not email can be sent is determined by each user's contact details. I think it defaults as below.
One can also use the forum's Private Message (PM) feature (link only works if logged in). It allows for attaching images, but I don't think it will accept other forums of attachments, so email will be needed, or using a service like Dropbox, etc.
Thanks Ric, got it.
Once before I had any kids of my own, I made up a bunch of rattles that had corn as the rattle, and made an excellent noise. Though I followed a plan from a national magazine it turned out to be completely in violation of basic principles. But, even had that not been the case...
A friend visited with a very young child, just able to sit up on it's own, and we gave it a rattle to play with. She sat on the carpet and was so impressed with the music she was making that she hammered it up and down at a great rate of speed, hitting the carpet on the downstroke, and her skull, with considerable force, on the upstroke. We were all rather terrified as all assembled sprang into action. She did not seem to notice she was beating herself, one would have thought, to death. No serious harm was done. But when I found a design that looked like a cannonball on a stick with a captured ring for a rattle, I was not inclined to arm children with it, even if it seemed to meet the rules at the time...
