I saw that scroll past and knew exactly where it was going to go.

Reddit's strength used to be that it tolerated the unscrupulous hilarity.  That user making the post would either know where it was going or would rephrase it later to get the question actually answered.

Reddit's downfall is going to be it's hyperactive, fussy, humorless moderation.  And I just read an article about their impending IPO this morning.  I'm not skilled at picking stocks by any means, but I doubt I would ever invest in such a cluster as reddit.  It's a fun place, but it's a cluster.

Their moderators removed the post, but kept the replies. It was a legitimate post about someone who had an antique family cedar chest that had been primed and painted several times with an ugly green, and he wanted recommendations on paint strippers to use. When I posted it, the topic post was still there.

I thought it was interesting because the post was misinterpreted, and I found the way the moderators handled it very strange. They penalized the poster for "breaking the rules" although in reading the rules they cited, I could find no such infraction. Are we now living in a world where we must carefully consider everything we say lest someone interpret some subtle innuendo to poke fun at?

IDK. I just thought it weird, especially on Reddit. The correct thing to do IMO would be to lock the topic, change the title, then open it back up so the person's question could be answered.

I once had a g/f who worked at a printing company. Her job involved something to do with stripping plates, and her job title, was--stripper. When anyone asked her what she did for a living, she (of course) replied, "I'm a stripper."  It was always good for a harmless laugh, and at the time no one was the least bit offended. 

Times have changed, I guess.

I saw that post - the chest was painted with green paint and looked to be a veneered chest. Good luck to them getting every last bit of green off of something that's going to have awkward little areas to reach. 

I guess reddit is going public. They long ago apparently went full "don't offend any of the advertisers with any humor!". 

I never really read it before this year, but it sounds like the volume was perhaps greater in the past. Going public in decline is an interesting concept, but maybe they have plans to make it much more commercial and greedy - who knows. Whatever the case, a bunch of folks who are retiring or may be in the near future probably want a payoff.  The whole thing is a little weird-claiming a $6.5B valuation, loading the setup with jarring ads (the app is worse, I skipped that pretty quickly) and then demanding unpaid moderators.

I don't care for Reddit.  Once you go to the Reddit site, all your google searches seem to contain more and more Reddit listings.  I deleted their cookies.

One of the biggest faults of the site, in my opinion, is that while you're in a discussion, the relevant or stored available information at your fingertips is almost zero. And it's intentional, to keep sort of the idea that something new is always rolling along and I guess maybe it prevents people from thinking they have any stake or right to older information. 

But google archives it, so if you are asking about some topics that aren't dead common but really specific, a fair bit of the discussion will come up on reddit. I don't think that's engineering by reddit in terms of cookies so much as it is the site being easy for google to database and organize. However, if you see a topic 2 years old and it's relevant to you, you have very very little chance of bringing it up and getting any answers because of the first thing mentioned - the site is set up to try to rotate about 8 days or a week or whatever and keep a chronological flow that doesn't involve revisiting after that. 

Often, posts are deleted in archived threads, too, and you can't really tell what was going on or what was said. 

the karma system is kind of dippy with one exception - the legitimate trolls that inhabited knots would be gone automatically just as a matter of site operation. routine.
